Small to Medium Size Businesses

You have to be a small business before you can become a medium size business and one day become a big business. Our country has grown to a world super power in part because of the ingenuity and dedication of small businesses. Where would we be without home grown companies like Ford Motor Company, IBM or even Microsoft. These companies started out small and then became giants in their respective industries. These trailblazers in transportation, computer manufacturing and computer software help shape our everyday lives with their ability to create something out of a concept.

On June 16, 1903, Henry Ford and 11 investors singed articles of incorporation with the state of Michigan, US for Ford Mortor Company, which had been started with just $28,000 in capital. A little more than a month later the company sold its first car to a doctor in Detroit, and the investors began seeing some promising prospects in their new venture.

On 1890 - The U.S. Census Bureau adopts the Hollerith Punch Card, Tabulating Machine and Sorter to compile results of the 1890 census, reducing an almost 10-year process to 2 ½ years, saving the government a whopping $5 million. Inventor Herman Hollerith, a Census Bureau statistician, forms the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896. The Tabulating Machine Company merges with two other companies in 1911 and in 1924 changes its name to IBM.

On February 1, 1975 Bill Gates and Paul Allen sell BASIC, the first computer language program for a personal computer, to Microsoft's first customer, MITS of Albuquerque, NM.

You may ask why highlight these three companies? Well to tell you the truth my first car was a 1974 Ford Mustang, the first computer I ever saw and typed my first letter on was an IBM and of course the software was Basic from Microsoft.
